How to create a DMARC record
Email deliverability
A DMARC record tells email providers what to do with emails which fail authentication, and sends you reports about emails sent from your domain. Here is how to create one with the policy none.
You will need an email address on your own domain.
Add the record
- Log in to your domain provider and open your DNS settings.
- Create a new record and choose TXT.
- Name: _dmarc. Most providers add your domain automatically, making _dmarc.yoursleepbusiness.com. If yours does not, enter the full _dmarc.yoursleepbusiness.com.
- Value: v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:reports@yoursleepbusiness.com
The address after rua=mailto: is where your reports go.
Email providers send a DMARC report every day. Use a separate address for these, so your main inbox stays calm.
Reports arrive as raw data. See DMARC reports: how to read and use them.
Check your record at mxtoolbox.com/dmarc.aspx.
Your domain can have several TXT records, but only one DMARC record. Two DMARC records conflict and stop the policy from working.
Send reports to several addresses
List them after rua, separated by commas without spaces:
v=DMARC1; p=none; rua=mailto:reports@yourdomain1.com,mailto:reports@yourdomain2.com
Each address receives every report. This is useful when you use several email tools or monitoring services. You still keep one DMARC record for the domain.
